Sheet Metal Apprentice

The Sheet Metal Workers International Association (SMWIA) is offering an Apprenticeship program. I was interested because I had just been laid off, and was open to suggestions.
My friend suggested that I not only apply for this one, but for apprenticeships with the carpenters' union, plumbers' union, the UA for HVAC, and the IBEW for electrical.
What you should do is go into the local union office, (every city has one) and fill out their form. They give a test every couple of months for math and English proficiency. When you pass the test, they put you on a waiting list. You are on the list for a maximum of two years. If they pick you, you have job secutiry for 5 years, and raises every year, I think. Must be a high school graduate or have a G.E.D.
After 10 years in sheet metal, my friend's friend is making $55 per hour!!!
